The colored panels are just indicators for the lead hardness and have no other function. Customers had experienced problems with broken leads jamming the pencil, however, this can be solved by removing the eraser and clearing the blockage with a fine pin. The pencil is available in different lead sizes but only comes in black lead. The shipping for the product is poor, however, the product itself is durable and built to last.
