- Tertullian of Carthage was the most formidable polemical theologian of the early Latin Church — a trained lawyer who brought forensic precision and relentless logical force to the defense of orthodox Christianity against the heretical movements that threatened to overwhelm the Church in the late second and early third centuries. This volume gathers nine of his anti-heretical works — the complete record of his engagement with Gnosticism, Marcionism, Modalism, and related heresies.The Prescription Against Heretics is the logical foundation of the collection. Tertullian's argument is essentially legal: before any debate about scripture can begin, the question of standing must be settled. The scriptures belong to the Church, which received them from the apostles. Heretics have no right to appeal to texts they did not receive. It is one of the most original and influential arguments in the history of Christian theology.The Five Books Against Marcion is Tertullian's longest and most sustained work — a comprehensive refutation of the most dangerous heretic of the second century. Marcion had rejected the entire Old Testament, posited two Gods, and produced his own edited canon. Tertullian's five-book response defends the unity of the two Testaments, the identity of the Creator with the Father of Christ, and the integrity of scripture.Against Hermogenes defends creation out of nothing. Against the Valentinians engages Gnostic mythology. On the Flesh of Christ and On the Resurrection of the Flesh defend the genuine humanity of Christ and the bodily resurrection against docetic denial. Against Praxeas is Tertullian's most important contribution to Trinitarian theology — the work in which he coined trinitas, persona, and substantia, the Latin vocabulary that would define Western Trinitarian doctrine for centuries. Scorpiace addresses those who used Gnostic arguments to justify apostasy under persecution.
